What’s going on? What year is it? MTV appears to hope that nostalgia will be key to getting better ratings as they prepare to bring back TRL.

Update (July 31): TRL will return on October 2!

Original story: Reminding adults of all the things they used to love seems to be the newest hit for TV networks. MTV is just the latest network to jump on the bandwagon.

According to the New York Times, President of MTV Chris McCarthy laid out the plans to revive the former favorite series (before they invested all their energy into reality television).

The new TRL is slated to return in October and the network is working on revamping the old studio in Times Square. The episodes will start off at an hour long per day, though that could be expanded to two or three hours if it succeeds.

However, Carson Daly will not be returning to host the show. Instead there will be five co-hosts for TRL which include DC Young Fly, a rapper and comedian, and Erik Zachary, a Chicago radio host. Still, MTV seems to believe this is a step in the right direction.

Interestingly, the New York Times also points out that when McCarthy was brought onboard to MTV he killed more than 100 projects that were in development with MTV. He stated that, “MTV at its best — whether it’s news, whether it’s a show, whether it’s a docu-series — is about amplifying young people’s voices.”
