Movies you may have missed on Netflix

Action

‘Hit and Run’

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepherd are pretty much the best. We all know this. So, if you missed your chance to see this one back in 2012, now is your chance to give it a shot. Some action, comedy, and a little romance make this the perfect way to spend an evening in.

‘End of Watch’

One of my favorite films of 2012, End of Watch is an incredible movie that’s definitely worth a watch. A found footage style movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, and Anna Kendrick, it follows a pair of cops through their day, and through their meetings with some pretty dangerous criminals.

‘American Assassin’

There’s a good chance that even the biggest action movie fans missed this fun one. I loved watching this adaptation of the first of Vince Flynn’s Mitch Rapp series, not only because action movies are great, but also because this has some pretty fantastic and unexpected casting.

Comedy

‘Edge of Seventeen’

Woody Harrelson and Hailee Steinfeld are a delightfully entertaining pair in this mature, sardonic take on teen comedy. Movies like this one prove that Steinfeld is a force to be reckoned with in the acting world, and we’ve only just begun to see the heights her talent can take her to.

‘Heartbreakers’

This movie is just the pinnacle of entertainment. Watching Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt manipulate everyone, including each other, as they do their best to con their way to a fortune is a damn fun way to spend an afternoon.

‘Mad Money’

I don’t even care if this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. It’s definitely mine. Diane Keaton is hilarious as the ringleader of this burgeoning criminal empire, Queen Latifah is the pragmatic realist who keeps these women as honest as criminals can be, and Katie Holmes’ sweet naïveté will make you smile viewing after viewing.

Drama

‘Her’

One of 2013’s shining stars, this dramatic exhibition of the merging future of humanity and technology is a quiet revelation. It showcases Joaquin Phoenix in a very different type of character from what we saw in 2019’s Joker and I’d be interested to see what fans of the latter feel about this film in Phoenix’s filmography.

‘The Theory of Everything’

Oscar nominees have a tendency to come out late in the year and don’t spend a lot of time in theaters, so they’re easy to miss. If you didn’t catch Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones in The Theory of Everything, you missed a heartbreaking tale with a score that left me stunned as I walked out of the theater.

‘Burning’

This one goes on my personal missed list, and I plan to make up for that in the very near future. I’ve heard such great, great things about Burning that it had to go on my list. I’m a Steven Yeun superfan, and I look forward to checking out this intriguing mystery.

Family

‘9’

It’s been a long time since I watched this one, but I remember loving the animation style and the incredible voice cast. It may hit a little close to home in its post-apocalyptic landscape, but it also delivers a punch of hope thanks to a little ragdoll. This one is definitely geared toward older kids, but should be great evening viewing for the whole family.

‘A Little Princess’

I never know if this is one of those movies that I was obsessed with as a child because everyone else in the world was, or because it’s just a wonderful movie that I fell in love with. I love to think it’s the latter, but if you haven’t yet watched this imaginative take on a Cinderella-esque story, it’s perfect for a family movie night.

‘Bolt’

With the wild success of so many Disney movies, it’s easy to forget some of the quieter successes. Bolt is a really fun tale of a girl and her dog, and how absolutely desperate he is to get back where he belongs. It’s super funny, adorable, and a great watch for the whole family.

I hope you discover a new favorite movie or two while isolating at home, whether it’s one of these recommendations or one of the hundreds of other movies you may have missed on Netflix.
