It’s official! The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film, Moulin Rouge! is officially headed to Broadway summer 2019.

When Moulin Rouge! first released in theaters, the movie seemed like a pretty natural candidate to get restructured to work on a Broadway stage. With a sweeping, romantic storyline, gorgeous sets, and amazing music, it seemed only natural for the show to one day pop up on the Great White Way. And nearly 20 years later, it’s finally happening.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Moulin Rouge! The Musical will debut on Broadway’s Al Hirschfield Theatre summer 2019. The show will begin previews June 28, and will officially open on July 25.

The show opened summer of 2018 at the Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston to rave reviews. The Boston cast was made up of powerhouse performances by Aaron Tveit as Christian, Karen Olivo as Satine, and Danny Burstein as Harold Zidler, all who are set to reprise their roles on Broadway, along with the rest of the Boston cast.

Producer Carmen Pavlovic expressed excitement over the Moulin Rouge! The Musical’s journey to Broadway, and praised the show’s placement at the Al Hirschfield Theatre for its rich history and stunning architecture, which is perfect for a show that is as visually stunning as it is emotionally moving. “We are thrilled to be bringing Moulin Rouge! The Musical to Broadway. We are especially delighted that the show is going to the Hirschfeld – the perfect theater for this production with its lavish architecture and rich history of landmark Broadway shows.”

Moulin Rouge! The Musical released a music video in 2018 to preview their version of the hit song “Come What May,” originally sung by Ewan McGregor in the 2001 film. Aaron Tveit’s take on the song was certainly different from the film version, but as a seasoned Broadway performer, Tveit was able to breathe new life into the song and performed a moving rendition of the song.

While that is the only music video released from the show, and a cast recording yet to be released, it’s got us so excited for this show to open on Broadway. You can head to the Moulin Rouge! The Musical website to sign up for ticket pre-sale alerts, or head over on December 3 for the general on-sale date.
