As they do every year, Google has published several lists offering a look at what the most popular search terms were over the past year.

The surprise death of beloved actor Robin Williams sent his name to the top of the search charts in the United States and worldwide. “World Cup” and “Ebola,” two topics followed carefully around the world, came in second and third.

Domestically the most popular search terms of 2014 were:

6) ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

9) Frozen
10) Ukraine

The following people were the most-searched for of 2014:

1) Jennifer Lawrence
2) Kim Kardashian
3) Tracy Moragn
4) Ray Rice
5) Tony Stewart
6) Iggy Azalea
7) Donald Sterling
8) Adrian Peterson
9) Rene Zellweger
10) Jay Leno

The most-searched for books of 2014:

1) Boy, Snow, Bird
2) Blood Will Out
3) Savage Harvest: A Tale of Cannibals
4) City of Heavenly Fire
5) Flash Boys
6) The Invention of Wings
7) All the Light We Cannot See
8) Words of Radiance
9) Yes Please

The most-searched for movies of 2014:

1) Frozen
2) Interstellar
3) Divergent
4) Gone Girl
5) Lone Survivor
6) Godzilla
7) 22 Jump Street
8) Big Hero 6
9) Annabelle
10) Maleficent

Naturally many of these search terms reflect some of the biggest stories of the year.

We were surprised to see Jay Leno appear on the list of most searched for people. While he did end The Tonight Show earlier this year, the decision to replace him with Jimmy Fallon was largely welcomed. Perhaps former fans of Leno’s were looking to see where he landed next.
