It’s official. Mortal Kombat is returning to the big screen on March 5, 2021.

A new movie of Mortal Kombat has been rumored to be in the works as far back as 2011, under the New Line Cinema arm of the studio. The 1995 release of New Line’s Mortal Kombat was critically panned, though it made $120 million worldwide. Its sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, did not far nearly as well two years later, and only grossed $50 million.

Warner Bros. bought the assets for Midway Games in 2009 in bankruptcy court, and started working on a reboot, with Kevin Tancharoen slated to direct. Tancharoen departed the project three years later.

Now, James Wan has boarded the project as a producer, and Simon McQuoid is directing. According to Variety, pre-production is expected to start in May, with filming taking place in Adelaide, Australia later in 2019. Variety added that South Australia Premier Steven Marshall announced on May 13 that Mortal Kombat will be the “biggest film production in the state’s history.”

Based on the popular 1992 Midway Games title, Mortal Kombat follows monk Liu Kang, as he seeks to save the world from an evil sorcerer. It quickly became an iconic horror-fighting game, with several of the game’s catchphrases entering pop culture vernacular — such as “Finish Him” and “Fatality.” Not to mention the theme song. (No, we’re not sorry that we just got it stuck in your head.)

With video game to movie adaptations on the rise, Warner Bros. are likely hoping find some success with this new version of Mortal Kombat.
