The Mortal Instruments TV series at ABC Family has found its female lead in Katherine McNamara.

The actress will be playing Clary Fray, the lead character in the Mortal Instruments TV show, titled Shadowhunters, based on the book series by Cassandra Clare.

Clary is described as “a promising art student whose bright future is derailed when her mother is kidnapped and she learns her life has been a lie. As she is forced into action, she embraces her newfound powers and realizes that she will play the central role in this new world.”

McNamara will star opposite Dominic Sherwood, who has already been cast as Jace. Meanwhile, Alberto Rosende will play Simon and Emeraude Toubia will play Isabelle.

The Mortal Instruments series is set to begin its 13-episode first season very soon.

McNamara will appear in the upcoming adaptation of The Maze Runner sequel The Scorch Trials as Sonya. She appeared in the 2011 film New Year’s Eve and has had her hand in a variety of TV projects over the past few years.

What do you think of McNamara as Clary?

The Mortal Instruments was first adapted for film but struggled to find a big enough audience to warrant a sequel. Now they’re taking a stab at television — a medium which will allow the story to be expanded.

City of Bones, the subtitle of the 2013 film, starred Lily Collins as Clary and Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace. Neither star was expected to return for the TV series.
