ABC Family has announced who’ll play the villain Valentine, Magnus Bane, and Clary’s mother in their forthcoming Mortal Instruments TV series Shadowhunters.

Update 2 (May 18): Maxim Roy has joined Shadowhunters as Clary’s mother Jocelyn Fray. According to ABC Family, the character is “very beautiful, warm, protective and bold[.] On the surface, Jocelyn leads a normal life running an antiquities store. We will learn, however, that she harbors many secrets about a past life; particularly her ties to an ancient group of supernatural beings known as Shadowhunters. In order to defend Clary from danger, Jocelyn transforms from single mom back into one of the most lethal Shadowhunters that ever lived.”

Update 1 (May 15): Earlier today we learned of Sprang’s casting, but it turns out one more actor has joined the show today: We’re now hearing that Glee alum Harry Shum Jr. (above right) has been cast as Magnus Bane! The character is “the high warlock of Brooklyn,” says the network. “With eccentric style, he’s fierce, cunning and keeps his cards close to his chest. Though he looks like he’s in his 20s, he’s hundreds of years old – which makes him wiser and wary of others.”

Original story (May 15): Alan van Sprang (above left) will play Valentine in the new drama series based on Cassandra Clare’s mythical Mortal Instruments world. He is being billed as a recurring guest star, meaning he won’t appear on every episode — in other words, he’ll only appear when he’s causing trouble.

The character is “a brilliant, cunning, and dangerously handsome Shadowhunter wielding immense power,” according to a statement from ABC Family. “His stoic, charming, and confident presence allows him control over his many followers. To seek out what he wants, Valentine executes anyone in his way, never thinking twice about it.”

Sprang last appeared in The CW series Reign as King Henry II.

ABC Family has been slowly building its Shadowhunters cast over the past few weeks. Dominic Sherwood will play Jace while Katherine McNamara will co-star as Clary. They are joined by supporting actors Matthew Daddario (who’ll play Alec), Isaiah Mustafa (Luke), Alberto Rosende (Simon), and Emeraude Toubia (Isabelle).

The series is expected to premiere later this year on ABC Family.
