Good news, The Mortal Instruments fans! After putting the project on an indefinite delay days before production was set to start, the City of Ashes sequel is back on.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes will begin filming in 2014, production studio Constantin announced today in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

Filming of the sequel was canceled in August when the first film in the book to film series The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones underperformed at the box office, grossing just under $100 million worldwide following a $60 million production budget and another $60 million in marketing costs.

Speaking to THR, Constantin Film’s head of film and TV Martin Moszkowicz says that they’re looking at what they did wrong with City of Bones and applying fixes for City of Ashes. “We are analyzing what we did wrong with the first film, particularly with the positioning and marketing, and what changes we have to make. We are working with a great group of people to reposition the franchise (for City of Ashes).”

Moszkowicz said that one problem was who they were targeting. “The readers of Mortal Instruments are older than you might think,” he said. “That may have been one issue in our marketing, that we focused too much on a very young audience segment.”

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones received less-than-stellar reviews from critics but was well-received by fans of the Cassandra Clare series. Thus, the franchise continues. We suspect that this time the film will be made with a slightly smaller budget so that the film is a lower risk.

City of Ashes does not have a release date, but we do know that this past May, director Harald Zwart and stars Jamie Campbell-Bower and Lily Collins signed on to return for the sequel.

Thanks, THR.
