We’ve known that Sony is working on the script for The Mortal Instruments follow up City of Ashes, and now the first new actress has been unveiled.

Sigourney Weaver is in talks with the studio to star as Imogen, one of the leaders of the Shadowhunters who’s out to avenge her son’s death. The news was broken by The Hollywood Reporter.

Sony began work on the City of Ashes script in May, signaling their confidence in the success of the first movie City of Bones, which doesn’t hit theaters until late August. Stars Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell-Bower are signed on to return as is director Harald Zwart. All other cast members involved with the first film are expected to return so long as their characters have roles in the book.

City of Ashes will begin shooting this October.

Weaver’s other credits include the USA television show Political Animals, Avatar, the Aliens movies, and The Cabin in the Woods.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones opens August 21 and is based on the book of the same name by Cassandra Clare.

Thanks, THR.

The Mortal Instruments stars just kicked off a nationwide mall tour to visit fans across the United States to promote the film’s forthcoming release.

We’re pleased to see the film already in the casting phase, meaning Sony is feeling very prepared to continue this book to film series.
