Mortal Engines was not able to steamroll the competition at the box office in its opening weekend.

The ambitious Peter Jackson fantasy project in which the world’s cities are giant war vessels failed to gain any ground with audiences this weekend. Despite the film’s large budget, it brought in a disappointing sum at movie theaters.

Box Office Mojo reports that the Universal film took in a meager $7.5 million at the domestic box office and an equally disheartening $42 million worldwide.

When you consider that the movie had a $100 million production budget and likely an equal marketing budget, Mortal Engines could stand to lose a lot of money. Some sources are saying the film is projected to lose over $100 million when all is said and done.

The movie’s failure could potentially be due to its premiere during the busy holiday season and the fact that it opened opposite other well-liked and well-attended films, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Mule. However, since it also has an appalling 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it may also just be failing to appeal to audiences.

Peter Jackson is obviously best known for his work on the acclaimed Lord of the Rings series and the also stunning, although slightly less beloved Hobbit trilogy. It seems like he tried to drum up a story and world that was similar in magnitude with Mortal Engines, but the popularity of the source material (the film is based on a book series by Philip Reeve) and effective marketing weren’t behind the movie to make it an equal success.

Jackson had allegedly hoped to turn Mortal Engines into a series, but if the film does as poorly as projected, Universal likely won’t move ahead with any sequels.
