Sony’s first Morbius trailer introduces us to Jared Leto’s Dr. Michael Morbius and the horrific living vampire into which he transforms.

Sony may (eventually) have Spider-Man back, but it isn’t waiting on his return to continue its Universe of Marvel Characters.

The studio, which holds the rights to Spider-Man, and 900 or so Spider-Man adjacent characters, jump-started its own Marvel Universe in 2018 with Tom Hardy’s Venom.

Though the film bombed with critics, it was surprise hit with audiences, grossing over $800 million worldwide and greenlighting a sequel.

Now a new anti-hero will join the ranks of Sony’s Universe of Marvel Heroes — Morbius the Living Vampire, played by Jared Leto.

Sony’s official synopsis describes the film as a horror action story of a scientist who, in trying to find a cure for a rare blood disease, accidentally transforms himself into a living vampire who, though disgusted by his own bloodlust, chooses to prey upon criminals he deems unworthy of life.

Morbius centers on Dr. Michael Morbius, a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist with a rare blood disease that makes him dangerously ill. As we can see in the trailer, the disease is slowly killing him. Determined to save others — and himself — from suffering and certain death, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate, radical gamble that involves using the blood (and likely the DNA) of bats.

While this cure initially reveals itself to be an rousing success, Dr. Morbius soon realizes that the remedy may be potentially worse than the disease.

Morbius stars Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, the biochemist turned living vampire. A ‘living vampire’ because he has all the features of vampires — long, sharp teeth, sensitivity to sunlight and a thirst for blood — but was made a vampire through science rather than the supernatural, meaning he’s alive and not a member of the undead.

Joining Leto are Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, who is Morbius’ fiancee in the comics, Tyrese Gibson as CIA Agent Simon Stroud, Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, who in the comics is the villain Hunger, and Jared Harris.

Morbius will be released in theaters July 31, 2020.
