Disney Pixar’s latest film Monsters University has arrived in theaters. Does it live up to the Pixar name?

The past two years were rocky ground for the beloved animation studio following the release of Cars 2 and Brave. Both received less-than-stellar reviews from fans and critics alike.

Monsters University, on the other hand, is fairing a bit better. Using already well-established characters Mike and Sulley from the 2001 film Monsters, Inc., Pixar went back in time to follow the duo’s college years.

In Monsters University we learn a lot about Mike and Sulley’s early days as acquaintances and how they became friends. The characters are voiced by Billy Crystal and John Goodman. Despite being a prequel, there are many references to the original film that you’ll appreciate if you catch ’em.

We also see Randall who’s voiced by Steve Buscemi. Interestingly, thanks to this prequel we learn that it was actually Mike and Randall who became friends first. After a fall out, Mike and Sulley team up for The Scare Games and eventually become friends after realizing they need one another.

Monsters University should resonate with those who are in their college years or wondering what path they’ll be taking in life. Like many kids, Mike and Sulley struggled with finding their identity.

The next Pixar film you’ll be seeing is The Good Dinosaur which is scheduled to hit theaters May 30, 2014. A teaser trailer unfortunately did not premiere with Monsters University, as is Pixar tradition.
