Kick off the second half of your fall semester with a new year at Monsters University, which hits DVD/Blu-ray on Tuesday.

Monsters University is Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. prequel, which made its debut in theaters in June of this year. The film was well-received by critics and Disney Pixar fans who have waited years for more from the Monstropolis world.

The home entertainment release of Monsters University on DVD and Blu-ray expands upon the world of college-era Mike and Sulley by offering up special features that show off the amount of care Pixar puts into storytelling.

For example, in the featurette called “School Story,” you’ll learn how the studio approached the challenges of creating their first-ever prequel. Hardcore fans of Pixar will appreciate the segment in which they address an inconsistent plot point first heard in Monsters, Inc. in which Mike says he met Sulley in the fourth grade (in the prequel they meet in college). Another challenge? Making the characters look much younger. Their process for successfully going back in time is discussed in a featurette titled “Furry Monsters: A Technical Retrospective.”

Elsewhere in the long list of special features you’ll find deleted scenes like one where we see a different first meeting for Mike and Sulley and the beautiful Pixar short The Blue Umbrella.

One particular highlight of Monsters University is the gorgeous picture quality you’ll see when using the Blu-ray disc. Pixar films have always shined in movie theaters and the CGI looks more impressive with each new movie. The Blu-rays offer that high-quality picture you’d expect in a state-of-the-art movie theater, in the comfort of your own home.

We believe Monsters University is a worthy prequel to Monsters, Inc. and highly recommend it for any Pixar or Disney fan’s home entertainment collection. With Pixar not releasing a new movie in 2014, University is a must so you can be held over until 2015 when the studio will unveil Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur.
