The first featurette looking at the creation and execution of Disney Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. prequel Monsters University has been released!

The 3-minute, 30-second preview is led by director Dan Scanlon. We see lots of new concept art, meet many many characters, and get a look at one new scene.

Scanlon dove deep into the film’s plot line.

“At Monsters University you only get one chance to try out for the scare program,” he explains. “If [the Dean] decides you’re not scary, then you are sent packing. Mike and Sulley go to do their try out, and because of their rivalry, they both get kicked out. And their dreams are dashed.”

But not all hope is lost! “… Until Mike gets an idea,” he continues. “The Greek Scare Games are an annual competition between the sororities and fraternities to see who’s the scariest at the school. It’s Mike who realizes, if they can win that, the Dean will have to let them back into the program. The only problem is they have to join a fraternity. The only fraternity that will take them are a fraternity made up of other ‘scare reachers’.” Note: It’s hard to decipher what exactly he meant/said by “scare reachers.”

We then see a great scene where Mike and Sulley are getting initiated into their new frat, but the ceremony is interrupted by an unexpected attendee. The style of the occasion reminds us of Nemo’s “Shark Bait” initiation in Finding Nemo. Watch below!

Monsters University opens June 21, and we’re eagerly awaiting the return of the two beloved leads voiced by Billy Crystal and John Goodman.

We learned late last month that a new trailer is just around the corner.
