Activision announced today that the latest entry in its juggernaut Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise has topped the $1 billion mark in just 16 days – quicker than blockbuster movie Avatar which took a whole 17 days.

“Engagement of our Call of Duty audience continues to rise around the world,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “‘Call of Duty’ as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture and its broad and continued success is further validation that audiences are now valuing interactive experiences over passive experiences.”

Breaking the $1 billion mark is not particularly surprising as Modern Warfare 3  has already smashed the record for biggest entertainment launch with $400 million earned in the first 24 hours of its availability.
