ABC has announced that Modern Family will come to a close after its 11th season.

The beloved, long-running sitcom will kick off its final season this fall before wrapping in the first half of 2020. The show originally premiered in September 2009 and went on to become one of the network’s most popular sitcoms, racking up five Emmys and one Golden Globe. Its vast library of episodes is now in syndication.

“[Co-creators Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd] have created one of the most seminal and iconic comedies in television history,” said ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke. “In its final season, there will be more milestone events that anyone who has been a fan of the series won’t want to miss.”

“For 10 years, our characters have bravely faced turning points in life and moved through them to
great personal enrichment; we have chosen a different path by doing one more season of ‘Modern
Family,’” said Christopher Lloyd.

And Levitan quipped, “Even after 10 years together, we realized there are still some things our writers don’t yet know about each other’s sex lives.”

Asked if a spinoff is in the works, Burke said she “would love” to have one but there were “no concrete plans” at the moment. Given the popularity of the show and its unique characters, we’re sure ABC will take a stab at launching one. (Whichever stars come back for it will be in for a serious payday.)

Modern Family stars Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Sarah Hyland, and Nolan Gould.
