Despite breaking $100 million during its opening weekend, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 has taken in the lowest box office numbers out of all of The Hunger Games’ movies.

Pulling in $101 million during its opening weekend at the domestic box office, one would think that Lionsgate would be very happy with those box office numbers, but Mockingjay, Part 2 was projected at a modest $120 million, and ended up coming up $20 million short of the already low projection.

The Hunger Games franchise has been a massive hit, with the first film launching the franchise with $152 million during its opening weekend, and continued to rise as Catching Fire took in a massive $158 million.

Fatigue possibly started in during the release of Mockingjay, Part 1, which took in $121.9 million during its opening weekend, going on to take in $755 million worldwide. Now we have the final film, which one could expect to possibly be the highest grossing film, taking in $20 million less than its predecessor during the domestic opening weekend.

It’s not like Lionsgate is going to be losing money on this film, as it’ll continue to do well at the box office, but the fact that the “payoff” film did worse than a fairly mediocre Part 1 is fairly surprising. We certainly expected to see massive numbers from Mockingjay, Part 2, but it looks like it may disappoint at the box office compared to the other three films.

The production budget for Mockingjay, Part 1 was $125 million, so we imagine Part 2 was probably around $150, so despite what the studio says, they’re probably a little disappointed that their final Hunger Games movie didn’t open to bigger numbers.

Although, there have been some mixed reviews, with some of Hypable’s staff saying the film almost followed the book too closely and forgot to give fans the big payoff after having Mockingjay, Part 1 be such a slow burner.

We’ll be sure to keep an eye on Mockingjay, Part 2’s total box office as it continues its run over the next few months, but there are a lot of movies coming up during the next few weeks during the holidays, and the numbers could end up being even worse than projected.

Definitely a bit surprising for the final film in an insanely popular franchise starring the biggest actress in Hollywood.

Maybe it’s finally time for studios to really take a look at splitting final books into two parts.
