The Hunger Games fans will be able to see Mockingjay – Part 2 in 3D and IMAX 3D on Nov. 20.

Lionsgate has released a press statement revealing that the final installment of The Hunger Games series, Mockingjay – Part 2, will be released in all formats on Nov. 20, which means that eager fans looking to attend a premiere screening can choose whether to attend a regular cinema, or opt for the 3D or IMAX 3D experience.

This is the first time that a Hunger Games film will be released in 3D.

“I’m thrilled Mockingjay – Part 2 will be in IMAX theaters,” director Francis Lawrence says. “Fans will now have the chance to see the film in any format they want, which is exciting.”

Speaking to the level of quality fans can expect from the IMAX 3D version, Lawrence notes, “We recently saw the 3D version of Mockingjay – Part 1 before its release in China, and the new level of immersion was really fantastic.”

Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President at IMAX, adds, “It’s exciting to be back in The Hunger Games world and once again team up with our partners at Lionsgate, director Francis Lawrence and producers Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik on what we believe will be a thrilling, action-packed finale to this blockbuster franchise.”

“The fan enthusiasm and cultural impact that this series has generated has been truly remarkable and we are thrilled to offer audiences the opportunity to experience the last chapter in IMAX 3D.”

Since the movie was not filmed specifically for 3D viewing, the IMAX 3D version of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology.

“The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie,” the press release promises.

Update: We wanted to point out that The Hunger Games director Gary Ross infamously knocked down the idea of this franchise ever receiving the 3D treatment in 2012.

“No, absolutely not, never,” he said to the idea of a 3D Hunger Games. “I don’t think it’s appropriate for this film. I think that if we shoot this movie in 3D, we become the Capitol. We start making spectacle out of something that I don’t think is really appropriate here. There needs to be an aesthetic distance here because of the nature of the material, the premise, what they’re doing. I think that cinematic techniques designed to intensify the experience if you feel them that way, aren’t really appropriate. I mean I love 3D, I really do and I think it’s a wonderful tool, I just don’t think it’s the right tool for this.” (Via MTV)
