In February, Hunger Games studio Lionsgate announced that Mockingjay, Part 2 would get a 3D release — a first for the franchise.

Now, the plans have been thrown out in the United States.

Forbes reports that the studio has decided to release The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 in the United States in 2D and 2D IMAX only. However, they will release it in 3D in China and other parts of the world as planned.

The reason for the change is because they want to “maintain the relative consistency of the franchise” — in other words, they wish to release it exclusively in 2D because The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay, Part 1 were not released in 3D either.

Said director Francis Lawrence in a statement, “I love the 3D format and I know that Mockingjay Part 2 will play perfectly in 3D and 2D internationally — but I’m pleased that we’re maintaining the 2D only (and IMAX) formats domestically. It is the best of all worlds!”

The decision to convert a film to 3D is usually met with a grumble these days amongst moviegoers. In most cases the third dimension doesn’t add much to a film and is usually only a headache for audiences because A) it sometimes hurts people’s heads, and B) they have to shell out additional money for a ticket.

Studios have naturally gravitated towards 3D releases because it’s a quick way to boost box office revenue and it helps decrease potential piracy, but the format’s ability to boost revenue isn’t always a success. Lionsgate’s own Insurgent was actually not able to beat Divergent at the box office despite the fact that the sequel had a 3D release.

All of us know that The Hunger Games franchise doesn’t have anything to gain from being in 3D, so we’re happy to hear we won’t be asked to watch Mockingjay, Part 2 in 3D this November.

The Hunger Games director Gary Ross famously compared the idea of releasing these films in 3D as Capitol-like in 2012. “I think that if we shoot this movie in 3D, we become the Capitol,” he said. “We start making spectacle out of something that I don’t think is really appropriate here.”

Surely Gary is pleased by today’s news.

Yesterday, the first (excellent!) trailer for the finale was released.
