Back in October we learned that Lionsgate had hired Danny Strong to write The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. Today we’re learning he’s now moving into writing the script for the second half of the book-turned-film.

Strong’s deal with Lionsgate had him involved with parts one and two, but he was only allowed to move on to the final film in The Hunger Games series following the studio’s approval of the Part 1 script. This news today confirms that they’re happy with what he’s created, so now he’s beginning work on Mockingjay – Part 2.

In December, Strong spoke about getting the gig for the first time. “I can say very little about it. I was approached to pitch on it, and I just literally holed myself up for a week and came up with a presentation for two movies. I pitched my little heart out, and got the job. I literally can’t say anything else — I will just get in trouble. It’s, like, Defcon 5 on security over there. It’s really crazy.”

The screenwriter won an Emmy for writing the HBO film Game Change.

Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence will direct Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2. The Catching Fire script was written by Simon Beaufoy with additional help from Michael Arndt. The Hunger Games was written by author Suzanne Collins and Billy Ray.

Catching Fire opens November 22, 2013. Mockingjay – Part 1 opens November 21, 2014 and Mockingjay – Part 2 hits on November 20, 2015.
