Despite splitting the book into two movies, Mockingjay, Part 1 shot even more material that ended up hitting the cutting room floor.
Ahead of the film’s Digital HD release tomorrow, February 17, two deleted scenes have been released.
In this first clip we see Katniss beginning to receive make-up before filming her propos videos when Effie steps in and takes charge. Ms. Trinkett, in her gray District 13 outfit, tells Katniss that they’re going to live up to Cinna’s expectations:
The second clip is a special one between Katniss and Haymitch. The latter explains why he’s still fighting – Peeta is alive and “we’re still in the game,” he tells the Girl on Fire. It’s surprising that this clip was removed from the film because it puts forth an ominous message that sets up the remainder of the story.
It’s not clear why these short but good scenes were cut from the movie. Director Francis Lawrence likely has some sort of explanation related to pacing or time.
Update: Here’s one more scene starring President Snow and Peeta! Donald Sutherland spoke of this chilling 3-minute clip in November, describing it as a “lovely scene. Just lovely.”
Mockingjay, Part 1 hits DVD and Blu-ray on March 6 with nine deleted scenes in total. Other special features include a big documentary, a commentary track, a new look at Insurgent, and a tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Looking ahead, Lionsgate has been quiet about Mockingjay, Part 2 while they finish promoting Part 1’s home entertainment release. The final film in the series will be released this November, and for the first time, in 3D.
