You’d think Mockingjay stars Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence both had a pretty easy day when filming their kissing scenes, but apparently not.

The early reviews of Mockingjay, Part 1 are in, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag.

One thing we can look forward to, however, is some quality rebel time with Katniss and Gale. Peeta is being held captive by the Capitol, and obviously this is upsetting Katniss quite a bit. Luckily she’s still got Gale by her side, heroic and ready to blow stuff up with her.

But what about their real-life counterparts Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth? According to the latter, J-Law is doing her best to make their intimate scenes as awkward as possible (luckily it doesn’t look that way on film!).

Hemsworth recently appeared on Jimmy Fallon as part of his Mockingjay promo tour, and he revealed what it’s really like to kiss Lawrence on screen:

“Any time I had to kiss Jennifer was pretty uncomfortable, really awkward,” Hemsworth admits. Ouch. So, it is just her personality, or…?

No! “She’s one of my best friends, I love her,” Hemsworth is quick to clarify.

The real problem? “If we had a kissing scene she would make a point of eating garlic or tuna fish or something that was disgusting,” he says. “And right before the scene she’d be like, ‘Yeah, I had tuna. I had garlic. And I didn’t brush my teeth.’ Fantastic, I can’t wait to get in there and taste it.”

But the story doesn’t end here: the cast appeared together the following day to do a group interview with Access Hollywood, and Lawrence was asked to defend herself:

Lawrence downplays the story a bit, making it sound a lot less diabolical. Nothing wrong with a raw onion sandwich in our book.

It’s not the first time we’ve heard gross kissing stories from the set of The Hunger Games; while promoting Catching Fire, Josh Hutcherson famously recalled a snot incident.

Well, at least it’s an equal-opportunity ick factor, fun for both Team Gale and Team Peeta.
