With less than a month to go until their 2014 film enters theaters, Walt Disney Animation Studios has announced their second 2016 film titled Moana.

Moana stars a female protagonist and will be directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the co-directing team who helmed Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and The Princess and the Frog.

In a press release, Clements and Musker describe Moana as one of the “great thrills” of their career. The first concept art is above and depicts Moana with an unknown character (perhaps someone named Maui) as they approach an island. This visual preview will immediately draw comparisons to films like Disney’s Lilo & Stitch.

The synopsis for Moana, which makes us think of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, reads: “In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.”

“Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself,” Musker said in a statement. “She’s the kind of character we all root for, and we can’t wait to introduce her to audiences.”

Disney describes the film as a story about “a spirited teenager on an impossible mission to fulfill her ancestors’ quest.”

There’s no official word at this time about whether or not the film has original songs, but that seems like a safe bet given Disney’s history.

We love seeing that Clements and Musker are on the project; their experience with helming films starring strong female leads will surely excite followers of Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Big Hero 6 will open in theaters November 7, and early reviews are already giving the film high praise.

Walt Disney Animation already has plans to release a film called Zootopia in March 2016. There are no plans for a 2015 film, (probably) because Pixar is releasing Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur next year.

Though the studio didn’t share a release date for Moana other than “late 2016,” they currently have a hold on the November 23, 2016 slot.
