Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation hits theaters this weekend. It’s so good, you’re probably already wondering if Mission Impossible 6 is in the pipeline.

Yes, yes it is! “We’re starting to work on it now. We’ll probably start shooting it next summer,” Tom Cruise said on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show earlier this week.

There’s no one better suited than Cruise to confirm if there will be a Mission Impossible 6 With that said, the studio may be waiting to see the Rogue Nation box office returns until officially green lighting a sixth Mission Impossible. Typically studios like to wait until the opening weekend is over before making any official announcements about another movie.

Over the history of the Mission Impossible franchise there’s been no less than four years in between films. By the sounds of things, the gap between Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and Mission Impossible 6 may be the smallest in the series’ history.

Perhaps the faster-than-usual turnaround is a sign of how the studio is feeling about the series. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation has been scoring great reviews from critics and fans following its open in theaters this weekend. On the movie critic round-up site Rotten Tomatoes it’s currently sitting pleasantly at a 91% average.

Interestingly, that’s the second highest rating for a Mission Impossible movie — 2011’s Ghost Protocol has a 93% rating, while 2006’s Mission Impossible III has a distant 70% average.

In a bit of role reversal for a standard movie franchise, the original Mission Impossible has a 62% rating while Mission Impossible 2 has a 58% rating.

The films have gotten better — at least review-wise — since the series started with Tom Cruise in 1996.
