On Monday night’s episode of America’s Got Talent, one singer touched the hearts of the judges and audience when he revealed he fought in Afghanistan and was seriously injured.

Turns out his story is not true.

Country singer Timothy Michael Poe had a stutter while speaking but was able to sing perfectly. He had claimed in his story to the judges that a grenade had hit him while fighting overseas.

Following the episode’s airing, the Minnesota National Guard released a statement which read, “Sgt. Poe’s official military records do not indicate that he was injured by a grenade in combat while serving in Afghanistan in 2009, as he reports.”

ABC reports that he was in the military, though:

According [to] official records, Poe served with the Minnesota Army National Guard from December 2002 through May 2011, working as a supply specialist. Records show he was deployed in Kosovo from Oct. 10, 2007 to July 15, 2008, and then served in Afghanistan for about a month in 2009.

This revelation by the National Guard may mark the end of the line for Poe if he made it through the Vegas rounds, which were taped several weeks ago.

Judge Howard Stern commented on the news at length this morning, saying “It’s so f***ed up.” He seemed to imply that Poe does not make it past Vegas.
