Expect to see the Minions around for a very long time. The latest film in the series beat Despicable Me 2 by making $115 million in the U.S. alone.

Minions, an origin story of sorts for the adorable yellow creatures which largely drops Gru from the plot, has made an additional $280 million worldwide, leaving the film with a pull of $397 million thus far.

Domestically Minions beat its predecessor Despicable Me 2 which made $90 million in its opening weekend. The reason for the big growth between films is clear: Minions is all about the minions. Everyone is obsessed with those little guys, and they’ve established themselves as cultural phenomenons.

There’s no doubt now that Universal will be planning more Minions films as they look to capitalize on these characters (Stay obsessed with them, kids!). But now that they’ve got the origin story and Gru’s story out of the way, where do they go from here?

Minions’s $115 million opening weekend total gives it the title of second-highest animated opening in U.S. history, beating Toy Story 3’s $110 million but not Shrek 3’s $121 million from 2007.

We liked Minions but didn’t find it to be as entertaining as the first two Despicable Me movies. The jokes didn’t land as well as they did in the previous films — maybe because we have a little Minion-fatigue? With limited English, there’s only so many tricks the minions can pull before the jokes get tired. On the other hand there were plenty of nice jokes for parents to appreciate from the ’60s and ’70s like the Beatles cameo. This origin story definitely helped pull parents into the theaters with their children and kept them from falling asleep.

But does Universal have to entertain the adults? These movies are all about pulling in the kids, and clearly focusing the story and marketing exclusively on the Minions was an idea that paid off very well.

What did you think of ‘Minions’? And where would you like the series to go from here?

Elsewhere at the box office, Jurassic World made $18.1 million and Inside Out made another $17.1 million. Terminator: Genisys came in fourth with $13.7 million.
