In a conference call with reporters today, Mindy Kaling, star/creator/writer/producer of The Mindy Project (and formally known as Kelly Kapoor on The Office) talked about her friendship with guest star Ellie Kemper, The Office series finale, and the various potential love interests on the show.

In a press tour promoting two new episodes next week, Mindy Kaling talked about her character, Dr. Mindy Lahiri’s newest love interest, a minster named Casey (Workaholics guest star, Anders Holm).

He is doing kind of a big arc playing this really funny character of a minister who has like, a lot of swagger. Almost as if a minister was a party promoter in Vegas. He has celebrity friends and he knows Moby… It’s a very funny dynamic to have with a Christian minister… Anders is a writer/performer, which I love. He’s so much to hang around on set. And we fight a lot in a way that’s really fun and we have such a great time.

When asked about other great shows she follows, Kaling proved to be just like every other dramatic television viewer, naming a few of her favorite shows.

I’m really looking forward to the last season of ‘Breaking Bad.’ ‘Game of Thrones,’ I’m dying for it to start. I’m waiting on Sunday for that to start up again. I like violent, cinematic shows because I think when you do comedy you’re kind of attracted to the opposite. Comedy-wise, I love ‘Workaholics,’ I love ‘New Girl,’ [and] ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Those are my ones that I don’t miss.

While we would all love to see her host a show like Saturday Night Live, she say’s don’t count on it, she’d “be too nervous.”

Kaling had such a big part in The Office, both on and off-screen, and everyone is eagerly anticipating her return for the series finale. It doesn’t sound like our favorite customer service rep will have much screen time, but Mindy does promise a satisfying conclusion to her character’s arc, involving B.J. Novak’s Ryan Howard. The two characters had lots of ups and downs over the last nine seasons, with both going their separate ways at the end of season 8.

I shot for a day. I can’t say too much about it except that there’s a nice unexpected reunion with Ryan. There’s a very gratifying and dramatic ending for the two of them.

“There’s a very gratifying and dramatic ending for them [Ryan and Kelly].”

Kaling says that writing comedy and watching comedy are closely entwined and she clearly loves her job. She’s very involved with the look of the show and she collaborates closely with the show’s costumer to fit the character’s wardrobe. Compared to her character, she says that while they have similar fashion interests, she keeps her personal style a little more laid back with pieces from stores such as Club Monaco, and more “hardware” than her character would wear.

When Hypable asked about the possible return of Ellie Kemper’s guest role as Heather in season 2, Mindy praised her friend’s talent but stated the unlikelyhood of her return due to Kemper’s busy schedule.

I would like nothing more than to work with Ellie Kemper for the rest of my life. I love her, she’s so fun to work with, she’s so naturally funny. Ellie, of course, she’s in a pilot at NBC and she’s so busy with various projects and things that I don’t know how possible that would be, there’s just a complete open-door policy for whenever she wanted to do anything on the show. I love her. She’s one of my closest friends and I would love to use her as much as I can.

“I would like nothing more than to work with Ellie Kemper for the rest of my life.”

If you are eagerly anticipating the sequel to her best-selling book, “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (And Other Concerns)” you might have to wait a bit, she is juggling so many things at once, but with her show going to hiatus, she has a little more time to focus on it now.

We really wrapped yesterday so today, after I hang up I’m going to go look at my computer and stare at an empty page. Even on the show, I’ve been jotting down things that don’t necessarily fit into the world of the show but essay ideas and things like that. I’ve been thinking about it kind of in the margins of when I’ve not been working on this. When we get to hiatus, that’s when I’ll begin.

There is undeniable chemistry between Dr. Mindy Lahiri and Chris Messina’s Dr. Danny Castellano, but Kaling speaks of her trepidation to put the two together, incase an actor comes onto the show and “completely changes the dynamic of the show.” She reference’s Ed Helms’ introduction to The Office in season 3, who became one of the intergal characters to the workplace comedy. She likes to keep an open mind and wonder’s “what else is out there” for the two doctors.

If you watch closely, you can see a framed picture of Tina Fey’s 30 Rock character Liz Lemon on Mindy’s desk that was a gift to Kaling from Fey. Kaling likes to think that “in the world of the show, Mindy Lahiri knew that woman was her patient or something. That’s the deep deep backstory that connects them. She thought she was her perfect patient. I love it. I think it’s so fun.”

Be sure to catch The Mindy Project Tuesday’s at 9:30pm and a special episode next Thursday, April 4, at 9:30pm on Fox.
