According to THR, The Mighty Ducks could be about to skate their way back onto our screens.

If, like us, you were a fan of the Mighty Ducks trilogy put out by Disney in the ’90s, this particular piece of reboot news might just get you excited.

THR reports that, per their sources, that a Mighty Ducks television series is in development at ABC Signature Studios. ABC Signature Studios, which is the cable and streaming focused arm of ABC Studios, declined to comment on the news.

What is of particular note, according to this report, is that original trilogy screenwriter Steven Brill and original producer Jordan Kerner approached ABC Signature to propose the project. That could assuage any doubts that fans of the movies might have at seeing the trilogy rebooted for the small screen.

As the series is still in very early development, none of the original cast has been attached to the project. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if some cameo appearances happened, should the project get picked up the a network. There was also no information, as of yet, as to whether the series would be a sequel to the movies or a complete reboot.

With ABC Signature Studios focused particularly on streaming projects — they recently developed Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger — a Mighty Ducks series could be the perfect addition to Disney’s upcoming steaming platform. We can’t imagine Disney would want it to stray too far outside of its family of channels.

For anyone unfamiliar with the Mighty Ducks movies, they followed the development of a pee-wee hockey team, under the coaching of Gordon Bombay — an attorney who landed the gig as part of his community service, after he was arrested for drunk driving. The follow-up movies, D2 and D3, saw the Ducks make it to the international stage, before shifting the focus to the team entering Eden Hall Academy on scholarships and playing on the junior varsity team.

Though critical reviews of the series were largely negative, it is beloved by its fans, and the commercial success of the trilogy led to the eventual formation of Anaheim Ducks, who play in the NHL. An animated spinoff series, called Mighty Ducks, also aired in 1996, spanning a total of 26 episodes.

Here’s hoping that the series comes to fruition. We’ll be keeping a very close eye on its development as it continues.
