Michelle Obama is coming to Netflix — and this time, she’ll be the one in front of the camera.

On Monday (April 27), Netflix offered up a first look at Becoming, an upcoming documentary that’ll give viewers an intimate first look at the life of former First Lady Michelle Obama.

The forthcoming documentary was produced in partnership with Netflix and the Obama’s Higher Ground Productions banner.

As you might recall, Barack and Michelle Obama made major waves in 2018 when it was announced they’d signed a first look deal with the online streaming giant. Since then, we’ve learned a bit more about some of the projects they’ve got coming down the pipeline at Netflix, but it’s exciting to know that one of those projects will offer up a closer look at the former FLOTUS.

Specifically, according to the official synopsis for the Nadia Hallgren-helmed documentary, Becoming will offer “a rare and up-close look at her life, taking viewers behind the scenes as she embarks on a 34-city tour that highlights the power of community to bridge our divides and the spirit of connection that comes when we openly and honestly share our stories.”

Fans of Mrs. Obama won’t have to wait long to check out Becoming for themselves. In fact, per Netflix’s exciting announcement, the documentary is set to be available for viewing next week on May 6.

In addition to announcing the release date for the Becoming documentary, the streamer also shared a brand new first look, which features the former First Lady talking candidly about figuring out what comes next after leaving the White House.

In a statement announcing the documentary release date, Michelle Obama spoke of how traveling on her book tour allowed her the privilege to meet and connect with people in cities all over the world.

“In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries, and dreams. We processed the past and imagined a better future. In talking about the idea of ‘becoming,’ many of us dared to say our hopes out loud,” wrote Obama. “I treasure the memories and that sense of connection now more than ever, as we struggle together to weather this pandemic, as we care for our loved ones, tend to our communities, and try to keep up with work and school while coping with huge amounts of loss, confusion, and uncertainty.”

The former First Lady wrapped her statement up with a message of hope in these trying times amid the current coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m here for you. And I know you are here for one another. Even as we can no longer safely gather or feed off the energy of groups, even as many of us are living with grief, loneliness, and fear, we need to stay open and able to put ourselves in other people’s shoes. Empathy is our lifeline here. It’s what will get us to the other side. Let’s use it to redirect our attention toward what matters most, reconsider our priorities, and find ways to better remake the world in the image of our hopes,” continued Obama.

“Even in hard times, maybe especially in hard times, our stories help cement our values and strengthen our connections. Sharing them shows us the way forward. I love and miss you all.”

Becoming, the Michelle Obama original documentary feature, hits Netflix on May 6, 2020.
