The Sopranos prequel movie, The Many Saints of Newark, is keeping things in the family when it comes to casting its perfect Tony.

According to Variety, The Many Saints of Newark has tapped none other than Michael Gandolfini to play young Tony Soprano in the prequel.

Michael’s father, James Gandolfini, originated the role of Tony Soprano in the critically acclaimed HBO drama. The Sopranos star died in 2013 at the age of 51.

Directed by Alan Taylor, the forthcoming film is set in July 1967 during the Newark riots. During that time, the acrimony between African Americans and Italian Americans came to a head, resulting in 26 deaths, and hundreds of injuries.

Sopranos creator David Chase co-wrote the script alongside producer Lawrence Konner. Other than knowing the film takes place during the Newark riots, Chase and Konner are keeping plot details firmly under wraps.

Gandolfini joins previously announced cast members Cory Still, Billy Magnussen, Jon Bernthal, Alessandro Nivola, and Vera Farmigia.

In a statement announcing his casting, Gandolfini spoke of how honored he is to board the project.

“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano. I’m thrilled that I am going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark.”
