The Prometheus and X Men: First Class star has signed on for the adaptation of the massively successful video game franchise.

Ubisoft today announced the casting via Variety, as well as plans to produce the film independently after 2011 negotiations with Sony fell through.

Fassbender will also co-produce the project, which will tell the story of Desmond Miles, a man who is kidnapped by a mysterious organisation called Knights Templar and sent back in time to retrieve various historical artefacts.

“Michael Fassbender was our first choice” to play the franchise’s iconic hooded hero, said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Paris-based Ubisoft Motion Pictures. “Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor.”

Ubisoft are currently seeking to gain financial backing for the movie, as well as pursuing film adaptations of Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon. The third proper entry in the video game franchise is set for release in October, and will be set during the American Revoloution.

It is unclear what part of the Assassin’s Creed mythology will be used in the screenplay, nor do we know we know if Fassbender will be playing Altair, Ezio, Connor or some new assassin.
