NBC announced that comedian Michael Che will be joining the cast of SNL when it returns in a few weeks and will be replacing Cecily Strong at the Weekend Update desk.

Che, who may be best known for his work as a recurring guest star on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart joined SNL last season but only as a writer. He will replace Strong and join last season’s on air newcomer Colin Jost. Jost is also a head writer for SNL.

Strong will continue to be a part of the cast and will be more available for sketches – a request made by her personally. The New York Times also mentions creator Lorne Michaels’ decision to hire Che:

“Michael is a strong writer, and he’s really funny,” Mr. Michaels said. “It’s always difficult to make changes and make ‘Update’ different from what’s gone before.”

Michaels also notes that they tried various different combinations of casting (as they have done in the past when having to recast the Weekend Update anchors):

“This is about a new era, what feels appropriate for now,” Mr. Michaels said. “That’s why we did a lot of combinations and tests, and this is kind of where we came out.”

SNL will premiere for its milestone 40th season on September 27 featuring host Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Parks and Recreation) and musical guest Ariana Grande.
