How I Met Your Mother, season 9, episode 1 “The Locket,” the first episode of the final season, airs tonight on CBS at 8 p.m. ET.
It’s been a long journey to get to this point: where Ted meets the titular mother and it’s finally here…almost. The much buzzed about ninth and final season will take place almost exclusively over a 24-hour period at Barney and Robin’s wedding.
We’ve got all the elements in place: the gang, the location and the mother herself, as seen in season 8’s finale as played by the adorable Christin Miloti, and now the process of getting them all together begins.
Here is CBS’ official synopsis:
On their way to Long Island for their wedding weekend, Robin and Barney come across a startling family discovery. Meanwhile, Marshall sees something online that changes the course of his entire journey back east, and Lily confronts Ted about letting go of Robin.
Presumably, “The Locket” in question applies applies to Barney’s startling family discovery. Though we’re not sure how any family discovery can get more shocking than discovering your biological father is the Trinity Killer, but we’ll see. And Marshall will encounter a character played by Sherri Shepherd on his flight back to Farhampton.
But the central conflict, and really what has constituted the conflict of the series thus far, is Ted coming to terms with the fact that he lost out on Robin. The sooner he does, the sooner he can “meet the mother.”

CBS does offer a free, legal replay of How I Met Your Mother episodes on their website to watch online the morning after an episode airs. Their video player can get a little spotty but it’s hard to beat that low, low cost of free. iTunes also offers How I Met Your Mother episodes to buy but currently does not have a season pass option set up.
