Seeking to overcome gender and age bias in Hollywood, Meryl Streep is funding a screenwriting lab exclusively for women over the age of 40.

Not only is there still a vast majority of male screenwriters in Hollywood, but unless you establish yourself in the industry at an early age, getting your “break” can be difficult.

You may have a great talent, or sit on a fantastic screenplay, but unless you have connections or people to speak for you, your voice might never be heard at all.

But then there’s Meryl Streep, champion of women’s rights (and yes, that includes women above the age of 40!), who is not only whooping and cheering for the cause at the Oscars, but actually putting her own money into the battle for equal representation.

Variety reports that Streep is funding a screenwriting lab for women over 40, to be spearheaded by New York Women in Film and Television and the female filmmakers’ collective IRIS.

The Writers’ Lab initiative was announced at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. The goal is to provide real opportunities for women over the age of 40, who have a distinctive screenwriting talent.

Interested? You can apply for this program between May 1 and June 1, and the eight winners will be announced in August.

Mentors currently include Caroline Kaplan (Boyhood), Kirsten Smith (Legally Blonde), Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights), and Jessica Bendinger (Bring It On).

So go on! You can do it — Meryl Streep says so.
