The Giver film adaptation is gearing up to take on an all star cast as reports have Meryl Streep and True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard in talks to join.

According to Deadline, Streep would play the cheif elder in the film, which begins shooting in October.

In Lois Lowry’s classic novel, the chief elder character heads up the utopian society where the story is set. The elder’s control begins to slip and what appears to be a utopian world inevitably evolves into a dystopian one as the story goes on.

Skarsgard is reportedly also in talks to join the cast as protagonist Jonas’s father, while Shameless star Cameron Monaghan is negotiating to play Jonas’s best friend in the film.

Negotiations have not yet been confirmed by the studio.

Jeff Bridges is already set to play the title character in the film, with Australian up and comer Brenton Thwaites to star as Jonas. There has been controversy over 24-year-old Thwaites’s casting as the character of Jonas is 12 in the novel.

The Weinstein Company is producing and distributing the film alongside Walden Media. Bridges also has producing credits on the film.

The popular novel of the same name has been a reading list staple since it debuted in 1993. It tells the story of young Jonas, a boy living in a Utopian society that employs the idea of “sameness” as a method of eliminating pain and suffering. Jonas is chosen to be the receiver of all of life’s memories, should there be a need for them.

The giver character (Bridges) and the memories he holds begin to plant the seed of rebellion in the young boy.

The film adaptation has reportedly been in contention for nearly 15 years, with Weinstein having optioned it in 1998. It was finally given a green light in 2012 with Bridges in place.

Vadim Perelman (House of Sand and Fog) is adapting the screenplay, and Phillip Noyce (Salt) is in the director’s chair.
