Meryl Streep delivered one of many powerful 2017 Golden Globes speeches, accepting her well-deserved Cecil B. DeMille award.

The 2017 Golden Globes were full of touching moments. One of the highlights of the evening was watching Black-ish‘s Tracee Ellis Ross accept the award for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy Series.

Another important moment came when Meryl Streep accepted her lifetime achievement award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,” and took the stage to deliver what became a powerful, pointedly political speech.

Streep openly condemned the actions of the U.S.’ current President-Elect, specifically his foul mockery of a disabled journalist during the campaign. She said:

“This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”

Streep went on to call out to the press, imploring them to “hold power to account, to call them on the carpet for every outrage […] Because we’re going to need them going forward. And they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.”

She also took a moment to remember her late friend Carrie Fisher, who tragically passed away in late December. Referring to her as “Princess Leia,” Streep was visibly emotional as she concluded her speech:

“As my friend, the dear departed Princess Leia, said to me once, take your broken heart, make it into art.”
