Although Syfy has postponed the final five episodes of Merlin, they’ve released two new Colin Morgan interviews where he discusses the final two episodes before the two-part series finale.

All through the fifth and final season of Merlin, Syfy has been releasing short videos with Colin Morgan (Merlin) where he rehashes the episodes as they air.

Although Merlin won’t return until May, two more of these videos have been released that show Morgan discussing 5×10 “The Kindness of Strangers” and 5×11 “The Drawing of the Dark.”

Obviously if you’re following the American schedule, these videos will contain spoilers, but if you’ve already seen season 5, they offer some great new insight into the episodes:

Speaking about “The Kindness of Strangers,” Morgan talks about the return of Alator (Gary Lewis), who is very firmly on Team Emrys. In this episode, Morgana hunts him down to force him to tell her where (and who!) Emrys is, but Finna (Sorcha Cusack) luckily is able to warn Merlin about what is happening.

Morgan describes Finna as, “One of the greatest aides that Merlin has had,” and he also notes that, for Merlin, this is the first time he’s met someone whose destiny is to help him, no matter what the cost. “We definitely see Merlin in this episode probably at the weakest he’s ever been, at one stage,” Morgan reflects, “the lowest of the low, and it’s a good emotional and physical struggle.”

In this video, Morgan discusses “The Drawing of the Dark,” which is the turning point for Mordred (Alexander Vlahos)’s character. “Mordred is the greatest intrigue and the greatest enemy of Merlin,” Morgan says, “but Mordred doesn’t know it.” This gives Merlin a big dilemma, because it’s one thing if someone’s evil by choice, but another when they’re moving towards doing something they don’t know they’re destined to do.

Morgan explains that, “it’s hard to try and stop someone who’s so well-meaning and so consistent… or is it? Are they just a really good actor?” This is what Merlin is struggling with, “and it’s really highlighted in this episode, because Mordred at one stage really begs for Merlin’s help.”

And Merlin “doesn’t make it easy for Mordred – he never has – to be his friend, or to really anything,” Morgan says, “because Merlin has essentially hidden himself all his life, and Mordred has supposedly put to bed everything that Mordred believes in to become a knight.” This is part of the reason for Merlin’s resentment of Mordred, Morgan explains. And then, of course, there’s the fact that Mordred is destined to kill Arthur, too.

“So,” Morgan says, “I think Merlin inadvertently is going about trying to make things the best that they can be, and they don’t work out. Mordred goes to the dark side, and he betrays me.”

Merlin returns to Syfy on May 3 with 5×09 “With All My Heart.”
