A new video interview with the four main stars of Merlin reveals the actors’ thoughts on the end of the BBC series. Note that this article does not contain spoilers for the finale episode.

While the announcement that Merlin‘s fifth season would be its last came as something of a shock to fans (mostly because it arrived with only a handful of episodes left to go, giving the fandom very little time to prepare for the end), it was never a big secret that the producers had always had a five-year plan for the show.

And in this new video interview with OT4, the four main actors Colin Morgan (Merlin), Bradley James (Arthur), Katie McGrath (Morgana) and Angel Coulby (Gwen) all share their thoughts about the decision to end the series rather than tagging on a few more seasons:

In the video, the actors all state that they knew the plan all along, and Angel Coulby says, “We always predicted that it was probably gonna be five series.”

Bradley James adds that he thinks the series left viewers “on a high,” while Colin Morgan says that the ending “felt right,” and that Merlin ended at its strongest point.

Going on to talk about the final episode, Morgan says, “Destiny has been the overruling theme for the whole run of the series. Merlin’s constantly reminded that his destiny is his main objective, and now he absolutely, 100% believes in it.”

Katie McGrath promises fans who have yet to watch the finale that, “All your questions will be answered.” She also expresses her gratitude for everything which Merlin has offered her as an actor, while Coulby expresses her sadness about saying goodbye to the cast and crew, who have all become, “a very tight-knit group.”

“I’ve been really proud of the aspect of growing up,” Morgan says, “that Merlin started out as a young naive boy coming to Camelot for the first time, and he comes out not all smiling, but sometimes, and definitely ready for more.”

Merlin is already over in the U.K., and wraps up its fifth and final season in America on May 31, at 10/9c on SyFy.
