Watch the appearance of Merlin stars Katie McGrath (Morgana) and Colin Morgan (Merlin) on Radio 1 this morning, on which they talk about the show and imagine a Merlin/Doctor Who mashup!

The pair appeared on BBC Radio 1’s breakfast show to promote series 5 of Merlin, and it was a very fun interview! Check out the video of their appearance:

In the interview, McGrath jokes that Morgan overshadows her, and reveals that it was not her birthday yesterday, even though a lot of people seemed to think so. They then talk about how tough it is to get up early for Merlin filming, and the fact that there’s not a lot of downtime on the set. The host asks if they miss filming in the off-season, and both McGrath and Morgan say that as a “pretty tight cast,” they do miss each other when they are on hiatus. They also discuss their Comic-Con appearance this summer, and how strange it is to see people dressed up as their characters.

In the second part, both stars reveal that they are big fans of the band alt-J, and are going to go see them live. On set, Morgan jokes that they have to “get their bling on” in between takes to balance out the medieval stuff, and staying on the topic of music also mentions Death Cab For Cutie as one of his favourite bands.

McGrath reminds them that they’re supposed to be talking about Merlin, and the interview transitions to viewer questions. They laugh about how they get into character, and then they share their memories of the first day working on the show. “I was petrified,” McGrath remembers, “It was almost my first ever acting job so I was completely useless, I had no idea what I was doing, and it took me a good three years to figure it out!” And Morgan says that, “I had Richard Wilson on my very first day, so he looked after me, and he has done for five years.”

Transitioning to talking about the fans, Morgan likens the set in France to a “Camelot theme park,” where the actors are the live-action show which fans will go and watch. Then McGrath discusses how tough it is to remember her long spells, and how much better Morgan is at doing them than her. Morgan says that everyone on the set gets on really well, “it’s a fun job.”

As in another recent interview, Morgan is once again asked about Arthur discovering Merlin’s magic, and says that “it’s gonna be an interesting one, if and when they decide to do it. I guess it’s going to be highly intriguing, it’s going to be done in an intriguing way. The show always deals with things in a very unexpected way, and I have no doubt that’s gonna be the same.”

They then talk to a fan face-to-face, and she asks what item they would have from another BBC series – and surprisingly they go with a chef from a food show, not the TARDIS! Speaking of Doctor Who, the host asks if they’ve got a competition with that show, and the cast imagines a medieval/futuristic face-off between the two shows – BBC, make it happen! Christmas special!

Finally, Morgan plugs the Merlin Facebook game, and says he’ll be playing it all day – and okay, maybe he will, maybe he won’t, but we certainly will be!

The host was Nick Grimshaw, who also took the stars into his “InstaGrim” photobooth for this fun picture, which was posted on Twitter:
