Game of Thrones star John Bradley will guest star on Merlin this week, and the official Facebook/Twitter pages for the show have released a first look at his character.

It was announced a few months back that John Bradley, who is best known for playing Samwell Tarly on Game of Thrones, would be appearing in Merlin‘s fifth series.

The official Twitter account for the series has tweeted out the picture above, confirming that he will be appearing in this Saturday’s episode “A Lesson in Vengeance.”

On Merlin, Bradley will play the character Tyr Seward. The episode description for “A Lesson in Vengeance” describes the character as a stable hand who gets “caught in the crossfire” as Morgana and Gwen attempt to carry out their evil plans, and “threatens to ruin everything.” Also set to appear in the episode is his mother Gelda Seward, played by actress Veronica Roberts.

Looking at the picture, we can’t help but notice that in the picture above he seems to be cowering before Arthur in a very Sam-like way. For anyone who hasn’t watched Game of Thrones, the character Sam is a scared, seemingly very cowardly friend of Jon Snow’s who joins the Night’s Watch only because his father threatened to have him killed.

However, Sam does show glimpses of inner strength, and we hope that Tyr Seward will allow Bradley to show the same range as opposed to simply being comic relief (although the actor is very good at comedy, too).

Bradley is far from the first Game of Thrones character to appear on Merlin; earlier this year we had Liam Cunningham (who plays Davos Seaworth on Thrones), and past guest stars have included Joe Dempsie (Will on Merlin, Gendry on Thrones) and Fintan McKeown (King Odin on Merlin, Amory Lorch on Thrones).

Merlin airs Saturday at 20:00 on BBC One. The episode will see Morgana continue her manipulation of Gwen, and once again make an attempt at Arthur’s life. Will she be successful? Probably not, but we’re like Merlin – always worried about the Once and Current King!
