Men In Black is officially heading back to the big screen but not in the way you might expect!

According to Deadline, Sony Pictures has officially greenlit a spinoff inspired by Men In Black set to hit theaters in 2019.

Unfortunately, fans of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones shouldn’t hold their breaths when it comes to seeing the actors reprise their roles as Agent Jay and Agent Kay, respectively.

Neither actor is expected to return to reprise their iconic roles in the hit alien franchise. Instead, the Men In Black spinoff will build off the universe the films created, and focus on a whole new set of characters.

Sony has tapped Iron Man scribes Matt Holloway and Art Marcum to write the script for the upcoming spinoff, which will feature another pair of good guys dressed in black guarding the world against tera-terrestrial violence.

Though the last few films in the franchise found the Men In Black battling alien forces on their home turf, the new film is expected to find the secret agents operating on a global scale.

Currently, the Men In Black spinoff doesn’t have a director attached, but given that Sony intends to have the film in theaters by Summer 2019, we’re sure it won’t be long before we hear of who might be helming the upcoming project.

More importantly, we’ll be interested to find out who the studio taps to fill Smith and Jones’ shoes as the next generation of galaxy defenders!

Sony Pictures’ Men In Black spinoff is expected to hit theaters on May 17, 2019.
