Speaking with EW for the magazine’s reunion issue, the four Mean Girls – plus Tina Fey – explained why they would or wouldn’t be down for a sequel.

The idea of a (real) Mean Girls sequel has been floating around for a while, and rumors over the past few years have suggested that one may be in the works.

But based on these new, seemingly definitive comments, we don’t think a Mean Girls sequel will ever happen.

Here’s what each of the ladies had to say to EW when asked about the chance of a second go:

TINA FEY: At the time, we did wanna start the conversation about the sequel and for whatever reason I was like, “No! We shouldn’t do that!” Now I look back and I’m like “Why?” But now, no — it’s too late now.

LINDSAY LOHAN: Why can’t we do a sequel? Of us all grown up. To work with everyone involved in Mean Girls again would be an honor. It was such a good experience. I think it would be really cool.

RACHEL MCADAMS: Oh God, I hadn’t thought about that! Yeah, I’d totally be up for that. Anything that Tina is at the helm of, I’d be into.

AMANDA SEYFRIED: No. No, because you can’t f— with that. You wouldn’t do a sequel to Rosemary’s Baby or any Woody Allen movie. You wouldn’t do a sequel to The Shining. I can’t believe I actually did compare Mean Girls to that — but, in its genre, it really is special.

LACEY CHABERT: I think it would have to be everyone involved again. I think Mark [Waters] would have to direct; Tina would certainly have to write it. If everyone would join again, I think they could make a movie. I think it’s just hard when you make something that’s very special and beloved—you don’t want the follow up to be a letdown.

Our takeaway: While a couple of the girls are up for a sequel, Fey – an executive producer on the original film in addition to being a cast member – seems completely uninterested because too much time has passed. It’s funny (and a bit bizarre) that Rachel McAdams “hadn’t” thought about the idea of a sequel until now. And it’s not so surprising that someone like Lohan, who could probably use a big payday from something like a Mean Girls sequel, is interested in a comeback.

Ultimately we think it comes down to Fey. And she says no. So it’s a no.

We bet that many fans of the original wouldn’t necessarily freak out over the idea of a sequel. As Seyfried notes, sequels are risky – especially when the original film is so beloved.

If there’s one thing we can count on in the future, it’s the fact that Mean Girls fans will continue to celebrate their beloved film every October 3. Oh, and let’s not forget about that Mean Girls stage musical that Fey says she’s developing.

Would you say yay or nay to a new ‘Mean Girls’ movie?
