According to one Marvel executive, we will hopefully see some serious LGBT representation in the MCU very soon.

The MCU has been slowly adding a more diverse range of superheroes to the blockbuster franchise. With the introduction of heroes like Black Panther and Captain Marvel, we’re starting to see a more diverse range of heroes take center stage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to Marvel’s production chief Victoria Alonso, the MCU is also ready to add a gay superhero to the MCU. As she told Variety at the Captain Marvel premiere, she claimed “the world is ready” for a gay superhero.

She continued to discuss Marvel’s commitment to diversity, both in the comics and the movies, saying, “Why would we only want to be recognized by only one type of person? Our audience is global, is diverse, is inclusive. If we don’t do it that way for them, we will fail. If we don’t put pedal to the metal on the diversity and the inclusivity, we will not have continued success. Our determination is to have that for all of the people out there watching our movies.”

While Marvel has had a bit of LGBT representation in the Deadpool franchise specifically with Negasonic Teenage Warhead (played by Brianna Hildebrand who is openly gay). And though nothing was shown onscreen, Ryan Reynolds has confirmed that Deadpool is indeed pansexual. However, the MCU has really lacked any featured gay superheroes, and we’re glad to hear they are working towards remedying that.

Rumors have been flying that the MCU’s upcoming Eternals is looking to make its lead character gay, but that rumor has not been confirmed. Alonso didn’t confirm this theory to Variety, but said, “We are going to cast the best Eternals cast that we can and when we’re ready to announce it we promise you we will.”

Hopefully, this means the MCU is taking actual steps to increase diversity in its superheroes rather than just saying they’d like to add LGBT representation to the MCU, because the world is definitely beyond ready for a gay superhero in the MCU.
