Director of the Maze Runner film, Wes Ball, shares his hopes for exploring the character backstories for Gally, Newt, Alby and more.

While speaking to HitFix, Wes Ball gave some interesting insight into just how much thought has been given to individual members of the Glade. He explains to the website that there is a lot of history within the Glade that is just waiting to be fleshed out and explored, saying, “We actually spent a lot of time with all the guys talking about what they’ve done – Not necessarily the character of Thomas, but all the other guys who have been in this Glade surviving for a long period of time. We’ve come up with all these backstory things about what they did and about when they first came up in the elevator. How Gally became a builder. How Aml, Alby, his whole story…”

Ball goes on to say, “we had this whole backstory stuff that we’ve talked about, and some of it kind of shows up in the movie in little places here and there that probably only we would know. But there’s this kind of dream of somehow maybe showing some of that stuff to the fans at some point.”

This information comes in tandem with news we learned last week from Maze Runner producer Wyck Godfrey. He revealed that consideration is being given to the creation of digital shorts. It is within these compartmentalized stories where audiences would learn the origins of things like Newt’s limp, or presumably how Gally found his place in the Glade.

It is no secret that a large part of the Maze Runner‘s success comes from the strong characters James Dashner created within his books. Fans adore the individual Glade members and their relationships with each other. Many have always had a strong desire to learn more about each individual person and the journey to how the Glade became what it is. There is simply an abundance of material to mine and shape into a compelling story.

Which is why it’s so encouraging to hear that the creators of the film are ready and willing to continue investing in the things the fans love the most.
