Writer T.S. Nowlin has been hired to pen the screenplay for The Maze Runner’s third installment, The Death Cure.

Although the writer has a rather short list of filmography credits, Nowlin has been involved with the Maze Runner adaptations since its earliest stages. After working alongside Noah Oppenheim and Grand Pierce Myers on the script for the first Maze Runner film, sole writing duties were left to Nowlin for its sequel, The Scorch Trials.

And now we’ve learned he’s been tapped once again for the trilogy’s concluding film, The Death Cure.

Apart from when it’s set to be released (September 18), we know relatively little about the Scorch Trials film or what we should expect from it, though this week we did get a look at the first official synopsis for the sequel:

“In this next chapter of the epic ‘Maze Runner’ saga, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow Gladers face their greatest challenge yet: searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organization known as WCKD. Their journey takes them to the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the Gladers take on WCKD’s vastly superior forces and uncover its shocking plans for them all.”

Although fans are a little in the dark, 20th Century Fox must feel confident in Nowlin and his adapted screenplay. Handing over the reins of such a lucrative franchise to a budding writer is a bold and exciting choice. Fox has been investing in the right people and The Maze Runner franchise has proven itself as a strong adaptation.
