Plans to continue filming The Maze Runner: The Death Cure in May have been scrapped because Dylan O’Brien needs more time to recover from the injuries he suffered on set.

The actor was seriously injured on the set of The Maze Runner 3 in March, causing the production to be put on hold temporarily. Plans were made to resume filming in Canada in May, but now the production has been put on hold indefinitely.

The Hollywood Reporter paints a grim picture: “Sources now say that cast and crew have been sent home, and a new start date will depend on O’Brien’s recovery and the ability to reassemble the large cast and crew,” they write. “Insiders say O’Brien’s injuries are more severe than first believed.”

Dylan O’Brien’s publicist told THR that “his injuries are very serious and he needs more time to recover,” and Fox confirmed that The Death Cure “has been further delayed to allow Dylan O’Brien more time to fully recover from his injuries.” They added, “We wish Dylan a speedy recovery and look forward to restarting production as soon as possible.”

A report from WorkSafeBC, who documents injuries on sets, described Dylan O’Brien’s injuries as involving a “concussion, facial fracture and lacerations.”

THR believes The Maze Runner: The Death Cure will no longer make its previously set February 2017 release date. Getting the cast and crew back together could be the most difficult part of getting the production up and running again, as many of the cast and crew surely have other filming plans coming up in the year ahead.

In March director Wes Ball told fans, “I’ve been overwhelmed with feelings of anger and sadness and guilt. But, I ultimately find myself left with just a deep love and respect for Dylan. He is one tough cookie. I’m sorry for the grief this accident has caused his friends and family as well as my wonderful cast and crew.”

Wes also said that Dylan would be up and running “after a few weeks of rest and recovery,” but it looks like the actor now needs a lot more time.

The Maze Runner opened in theaters September 2014, and the sequel The Scorch Trials arrived one year later in September 2015.
