About ‘Maverick’ by Karina Halle:

Forget playing it safe.

John “Maverick” Nelson likes to live his life on the edge – literally. A crucial member of the search and rescue team in the mountainous British Columbian town of North Ridge, Maverick’s brash and bold attitude means he’s the first one to ascend into danger, no matter the risk.

When it comes to women, though, Maverick errs on the side of caution. For all his cocky charm, rugged good looks and sexual swagger, he remains as unreachable as the surrounding peaks. Hot, wild sex? He’ll tell you there’s no better way to spend a cold, wintry night. Relationships? He’d rather freeze.

That is until he lays his eyes on American Riley Clarke. Trading in the crippling expenses of Aspen for BC, Riley is North Ridge’s newest member of their search and rescue team and the only woman on the job, which means spending a lot of time with Mav in adrenaline-pumping situations.

With the chemistry between them hot enough to melt snow, keeping their hands off each other is detriment to the success of their team. Besides, Maverick’s her boss and she didn’t work her ass off in Colorado just to throw it all away for some mind-blowing sex.

But when the worst winter in years sweeps in, Riley and Maverick will have to battle the elements along with their attraction for each other. And if either of them slip up, both of them will be in for a deep freeze.

‘Maverick’ by Karina Halle review:

Maverick is a bit of a deviation from what readers are used to seeing from Karina Halle. She’s quite known for romances that will rip your heart out and leave you quite an emotional mess by the end of her books. Such was the case for the first book in this series, Wild Card.

But Maverick is actually very light hearted, fun, and extremely sexy. I didn’t have any problem breezing through this book and I was totally in love with both of the main characters. They have such a great back-and-forth throughout the book, and the heroine Riley is quite sassy. She’s full of great quips and has no problem putting Maverick in his place.

“‘You’ve only been my boss for like a day, and I think I can take care of myself. No need for you to act like a caveman.'”

Riley is also very comfortable in her skin, and is a great sex positive character. She enjoys sex and doesn’t really care what others think of her. Her only time complaining about sleeping with a guy is when she drunkenly hooks up with a local man whom she describes as having a micro-penis. I also loved that Maverick didn’t care at all about her attitude towards sex. In fact, he loved that she was confident and never slut-shamed her.

The main thing keeping these two apart is that they’re not allowed to be in a relationship per company rules. Maverick is the boss man so he should technically be the one making sure everyone follows the rules. He puts up one hell of a fight and tries to stay away from Riley. But she’s instantly attracted to him and doesn’t make it easy for him to deny her.

“She removed her thumb and stares at me, her lids heavy, and I don’t know how much longer I can keep it together. I am a fucking weak man in the end.”

Leading up to their relationship, they have some very heated moments where they nearly give in. These will have the reader salivating while they read the book. I actually think some of the best parts of the novel come before the couple are ever actually together. The sexual tension is almost enough to make the pages catch fire.

Once they are together, the two waste no time in playing out some of their greatest fantasies. Since neither is shy about their sexuality they have an easy time being together in and out of the bed.

“Every day you become more ingrained in my head, in my heart, I’m starting to think I’ll never be rid of you. You’re under my skin. You’re there to stay. But I don’t say any of that because even the feelings are too raw for me to process.”

However, in their line of work they’re constantly risking their lives and it’s not long before something from Riley’s past begins to haunt her. They also have to deal with dangerous situations together which causes its own issues. Plus, they have the added stress of having to sneak around so they don’t get caught breaking the rules at work.

The novel can be read as a standalone, but readers also get to check in with the characters from Wild Card which is always fun. Even though this novel is a lot lighter than previous ones by Karina Halle, it’s written just as well as I’ve come to expect from her. As long as readers go into the book with an open mind, I think they can expect to love this one.

Maverick by Karina Halle will be released on October 17! Pre-order now from iBooks, Barnes & Noble, or Kobo. And don’t forget to add it to your Goodreads!
