Matt Smith may no longer be on Doctor Who, but with Terminator: Genesis, he won’t be leaving science fiction behind.

Former Doctor Who actor Matt Smith will be joining Terminator: Genesis in a major role. Smith will play a new character with a strong connection to John Connor, son of Sarah Connor. The role is a major one that will grow as the new trilogy progresses.

Smith will join the talented cast, which includes Arnold Schwarzenegger returning as the titular cyborg, Game Of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jason Clarke as John Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, Day Okeniyi as Danny Dyson, son of the cyborg developer played by Joe Morton in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Terminator: Genesis, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 1, 2015, has begun filming but is still kept under a cloud of secrecy. It’s been rumored that this chapter in the Terminator saga will be like the Back to the Future Part II of the series, which isn’t a huge stretch for a time travel series.

A new rumor from HitFix makes this a little more clear:

There is a scene in the script where, literally, we see the scene from the first TERMINATOR film where Arnold steps out, the punks threaten him, he rips Bill Paxton’s heart out and takes his clothes and wanders off. And as soon as that scene ends, another Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is older and bearded and a very different version of the Terminator, walks in from the side and plays another scene right at the scene of that first incident.

That fits in with the previous rumor that suggested that Terminator 5 will take place during different times: the future, 1984, 1991, and another important time. The 1984 and 1991 times would reportedly have important plot points of Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, respectively.

If this is all true, Terminator: Genesis will either be really good or really bad. Either way it’ll be really interesting, and we can’t wait to find out.

What do you think of Matt Smith joining ‘Terminator: Genesis’?
