Doctor Who star Matt Smith has been cast in the apocalyptic zombie flick Patient Zero.

Updated March 10, 2015: Production has officially kicked off on Matt Smith’s zombie drama Patient Zero.

Smith is joined by Natalie Dormer and John Bradley, both of Game of Thrones fame, with Stanley Tucci capping off the main cast.

The movie is directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky.

Original news story:

Matt Smith is trading zombies for… zombies? Going from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to Patient Zero, Smith is staying firmly within the sci-fi genre.

Smith will co-star with Game of Thrones and Mockingjay actress Natalie Dormer, with Stefan Ruzowitzky directing and Mike Le penning the script.

Patient Zero is (sadly?) not an adaptation of the Doctor Who radio play of the same name.

The movie takes place following a zombie outbreak (well, it doesn’t actually say “zombie,” but “a new species driven by violence” is pretty synonymous), where a human survivor who finds himself immune and able to communicate with the infected sets out to locate Patient Zero.

Smith will likely play the survivor, with Dormer possibly playing his wife or another person immune to the infection.

Matt Smith can next be seen in Terminator: Genisys, which premieres July 1, 2015.

Smith has been working with a lot of Game of Thrones actors lately: both Charles Dance and Lena Headey will appear in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, while Emilia Clarke is playing Sarah Connor in Terminator: Genisys.

Surely it is only a matter of time until Matt Smith finds his way to Westeros?! Or is that just wishful thinking?

Production on Patient Zero is expected to begin next year.
