Matt Smith has lined up his next project, and it’s a far step away from his role as Prince Philip on Netflix’s The Crown.

Digital Spy reports that Doctor Who alumn Matt Smith has officially signed on to play serial killer Charles Manson in the upcoming crime drama, Charlie Says.

Manson was a notorious serial killer and cult leader who was active in the late 1960s. Under his order, his followers (known collectively as the Manson Family) committed a series of nine murders at four locations between July and August in 1969.

Though Smith’s new project isn’t the only Manson-based film coming down the pipeline, it does feature a bit of a twist. Instead of focusing on telling the story of the notorious cult leader, or one of the infamous murders he carried out, Charlie Says will instead focus on a few of the convicted members of the Manson Family.

In Charlie Says, we’ll hear the story of three young women sentenced to death following the Manson murders. After the death penalty is lifted and their sentence changes to life imprisonment, they begin to learn of the horrific crimes they committed through a young graduate student who is sent in to teach them.

Joining Smith in the upcoming drama are Hannah Murray (Game of Thrones, Skins) Odessa Young (Assassination Nation), and Marianne Rendon (Imposters), who will play the three women convicts.

Meanwhile, Merritt Weaver (The Walking Dead, Nurse Jackie) will play the young graduate student Karlene Faith.

Helmed by American Psycho director Mary Harron, Charlie Says is set to premiere sometime in 2018.
